IN MEMORIAM

I’m sad that I cannot be there to say this last goodbye.
You know if it were possible, I would most surely try.
But time has damaged me as well, and though I long to be,
I’ll have to be content at home with just the memory.

And though no doubt the will be tears, there will be smiles too.
Thoughts of all the happy years that we have both lived through.
I’ll remember too the hard times, when the war we did survive,
And by some great good fortune, at its end, were still alive.

And so, dear sister, I will pray that you may rest at last
Secure in the memory of our long and happy past.
And though I have a dear and loving family of my own,
I can’t escape the feeling that at last I&rsquuo;m all alone.

(Written on the sad occasion of Addie’s death, his last remaining sister,
in the autumn of 2007)
