Nick's Poetry Corner

RETURNING FROM WEEKEND LEAVE 1945

I watch the dawn come up
Beyond the signals and the reeking chimney pots
The scattered lights in windows
Silently bear witness to a waking world
The train rolls northward bearing me away
From you, from love
Into a bleak oblivious world of men
Where hearts are hid beneath the coarsest wit
Lest sentiment should be decried as weak

I watch the dawn come up
Sometimes with rain or snow
But always in a melancholy mood,
Leaving some little part of me behind
But ever again in gay light hearted mood
Back I shall come to find you laughing too
Crowned with the sparkling sun
Until someday we both shall stand
And watch the dawn come up - on Life
