MEMORY

It seems like only yesterday, that hand in hand,
We ran together on the golden sand.
Swam together in the cool blue sea,
Then jogged back to the caravan for tea.
Long walks upon the clifftop’s springy turf,
With far below the busy Cornish surf.
Dodging the sea birds, riding on the air,
Happy to be together, without care.
Middle aged in years, but young at heart.
Always together, never far apart.

Today you look at me with distant eyes,
Unsure if I speak truth, or I tell lies.
You can’t remember all the years we’re wed,
Sometimes you fear the stranger in your bed.
But sometimes just like sunlight through a crack
A long lost memory comes flooding back.
But sadder still the memory does not last,
All is forgotten of our happy past,
Now old in years, and oh so sad at heart.
Though still together, we’re so far apart.
